HISTORICAL SIGHTS

The county is rich in medieval fort ruins on the top of the hills. The forts of Hollókő, Salgó, Somoskő and Drégely attract both the lovers of history and the enthusiasts of the spectacular panoramic view. Hollókő is a part of the world heritage, thanks to the preservation of the ancient Palóc folk architectural style. The old traditions and Palóc culture is actively preserved in our days in the village.

SIGHTS OF NATURE

The forests of Nógrád county hide several rare geological treasures. The Béri andesit flow and stone storage, the Boszorkánykő, the Szilváskő, the “Palóc Grand Canyon”, namely the valley of the Páris creek offer a lot of exciting sights to see. Just as one of the most complex and spectacular fossil deposit of Europe, the Prehistoric Pompeii, the fossils of Ipolytarnóc, as it is widely known.

SACRED PLACES

Religious people living here or visiting can replenish themselves at many sacred locations. Besides the 127 Christian churches in the county and the Franciscan monastery of Szécsény you can visit Mátraverebély-Szentkút, which is a significant pilgrimage destination of the Christians, and a National Shrine, that has been attracting hundreds of thousands of believers for 800 years. The Tara Temple of Tar and the Peace Stipa sanctified by the Dalai Lama, just as the memorial park in Garáb offer opportunities of spiritual practices for the followers of the Buddhism.
