Salgótarján
The county seat of Nógrád county, and its largest town.
Economy
Mechanical engineering, heavy industry, coal mining and glassworks have always been determining parts of the industry of Salgótarján.
Besides the floating glass factory and the stove factory you can find The City Gate of Salgótarján industrial park on the southern perimeters of the town, with more than 30 businesses on its green- and brownfield sites, some of them involved in producing electrical and electronic equipment for motor vehicles, electronic equipment, and sealing elements/packaging solutions produced by injection moulding.
Education
Salgótarján has 4 nurseries, 11 kindergartens, 10 primary schools, 7 secondary schools and 2 youth hostels. The English bilingual Bolyai János High School has been placed among the best 100 secondary schools of Hungary in the recent years, and it keeps its place among the best 10 schools among the bilingual schools. In the Vocational Training Centre of Salgótarján the applicants can choose from about 100 trades to learn. The Salgótarján Training and Research Center of the Óbuda University offers undergraduate engineering informatics training and higher education technical vocational training to the students.
Culture
The József Attila Cultural and Conference Centre, the Balassi Bálint County Library and the Apolló Cinema are among the cultural institutions of the town. The Zenthe Ferenc Theatre, that is outstanding even at national level, offers its own and guest performances to the audience during the whole year.
The Dornyay Béla Museum and Mining Exhibition is a unique sight to see. It is the second natural underground mining museum in Europe, and the first in Hungary, that was a real mining operation.
Sport
The county seat is a young town, still, it has given several Olympic athletes to the country.
It has a stadium equipped with the most modern technology of the country, and a football field with the most scenic surroundings.
The Town Swimming Pool can be found in a renewed environment, and the Town Sport Center with tarmac tennis fields and football fields with artificial grass surface serves the people wishing to do some sports.
The Salgó Rally with its long tradition attracts large crowds of fans. The unparalleled natural environment around the county seat helped to establish sports like cross-country running, Spartan races or national endurance hiking. Among the renewed institutions of the buzzing sports life, the town achieved funds for establishing one of the best sports and recreational centers of the country, suitable for the training of professional athletes.
